Te Rau Matatini

“Kua tawhiti kē tō haerenga mai, kia kore e haere tonu. He tino nui rawa o ōu mahi, kia kore e mahi nui tonu.
You have come too far, not to go further. You have done too much, not to do more.”

Tā Hemi Henare (Ngāti Hine, 1989)

Te Rau Matatini's core business is workforce development (Māori and non-Māori), education, clinical and cultural capability and capacity for the advancement of indigenous health and wellbeing for our people, their communities and whānau families.

Te Rau Matatini are leaders and change agents promoting an intergrated Māori approach to workforce development. We are clear in our vision to contribute as a world leading organisation with a strategic focus on becoming the centre of excellence for Māori workforce training, education and capability-building solutions for the advancement of indigenous wellness.

Te Rau Matatini has been a key player in the development of suicide prevention resources, training and programmes for Māori communities. One in five people who die by suicide are Māori, rates of youth suicides are two-and-a-half times higher for Māori youth compared with non-Māori youth, and there is growing concern that suicide is increasing among Pasifika communities. We empower Māori communities with the tools and resources they need to help whānau in need and to prevent suicide.

Te Rau Matatini through Waka Hourua supports and develops activities, conversations and solutions in pursuit of enhancing Māori whānau, hapū, iwi, Pasifika families and communities.

The solutions identified by Waka Hourua to provide suicide prevention are focused on:

  • Building the capacity and capability of Māori whānau, hapū, iwi, Pasifika families and communities, to prevent suicide and to respond safely and effectively when and if suicide occurs
  • Ensuring that culturally relevant education and training are available to Māori whānau, hapū, iwi, Pasifika families and communities that focus on building resilience and leadership
  • Building the evidence base of what works for Māori whānau, hapū, iwi, Pasifika families and communities to prevent suicide, through research carried out by, with and for these
  • groups, and
  • Building the leadership for suicide prevention.

Te Rau Matatini has increased its campaign in suicide prevention information, dialogue and education among Māori communities with extending its communications capability to widen its reach. This is reflected in an increase in national and international interest in Waka Hourua with the learnings shared at regional, national and international conferences.
